I’m not 100% sure, for I was a little tyke, but I thought Bud Collins’ TV debut came in 1961 when ABC taped (and edited) the men’s finals at Wimbledon for showing the next week on their then-new “Wide World Of Sports”. Collins wrote about Tennis for the Boston Globe, and I believe “Wide World” producer Roone Arledge was looking for someone to describe the match.

So by 1963, when WGBH began covering Longwood, Collins probably had two or three years’ of TV experience.
