To Fellow Alumni:

Jay Collier has been doing a yeoman’s job keeping our website up to date. He has devoted many volunteer hours in making sure we see the latest news about the Mother Ship and its alumni. It is time for us to thank him.

I have asked him to put a tag on the site asking for volunteer $$ to keep him in bratwurst and beer. (Sorry, that’s my vision of haute cuisine, not his).

If you are not totally broke from this recession, send a few coins his way. He deserves our support.

I’m not particularly bothered by requests for funding assistance to support the WGBH Alumni web site, Since I maintain a few sites myself, I know they cost money; ours is no exception. And considering the amount of pro-bono work required to continue the enterprise with such a high level of professionality and sensitivity, I feel we alumni are the beneficiaries of a great bargain. Contributing financially to the upkeep of the site might be seen, not just as paying the piper (who, in turn, has his own pipers to pay), but as a kind of tangible testimonial to our shared history, as well as a gesture honoring each and every one of our WGBH ‘family,’

I am largely retired from the money earning world, and am one of those typical ‘seniors living on a fixed income.’ So, I don’t have a lot of money to throw around. But I’m about to contribute what little I can afford as a kind of an investment in ‘us,’ and as a tiny gesture of gratitude for the fine work Jay Collier continues to do on our collective behalf.

The donations received have only just started to cover out-of-pocket costs — domain registration, site hosting, and website software — which have been over $100 a year starting in 2007. The hundreds of hours of editorial and production time have been donated, as with all the contributors to this site. (BTW, I don’t think there are any out-of-pocket costs for Facebook groups.)

Many of us have contributed to the WGBH Alumni pages, both here, on Facebook and through personal blogs. I find this pitch for “donations” to go to one individual to be offensive and inappropriate.
