EmilyLovering’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, ’00sSupport, Production, Marketing/Outreach, Auction/Events, AdministrationA smattering of secretarial support & an overabundance of scattered energy was offered to all or most departments and programs since arrival on May 23, 1963 through a much delayed final departure in May of 2003In 1963 I located the Red Frame Building behind the Science Museum which a youthful WGBH shared with the Museum’s maintenance department, and became Program Manager Robert L. Larsen’s secretary. He, sweetest possible soul, overlooked my unfamiliarity with typewriters, zero history in composing letters, and any aptitude in answering a telephone. Overpaid at $55/wk and agreeing to two evenings a week at Hickock Secretarial School, keyboard perfection was attained. During a long run thereafter, I thrived, talked, organized, edited, fetched dazzling guests from Boston theaters to the “Elliot Norton Reviews” set, wrote, spoke convincingly on things I knew little about, transcribed tapes overnight for current productions in a hurry, provided a horse or pony as needed for fundraising gambits, and had a toe in the secretarial door of almost every production WGBH birthed during my stay. In 2003 there came the end to a colorful gallop and I retired gracefully but never silently regarding the miracle and delight of growing up on Western Avenue.
